Rwandan’s probable last King’s body has been rested in Vienna Funeral Home in the US where he has been living for the last 24 years.
According to his personal aid, Boniface Benzige, the final resting place for King Kigeli V Ndahindurwa Jean Baptist is not yet known as tensions between his follows in Diaspora and those at home in Rwanda continue to hold his burial arrangement in suspense.
He said that there are no talks with the Rwandan government so far on the burial arrangements of the king.
“The delegation that came from Kigali said that it wasn’t sent by the government arrange the burial of the king. So we are not sure who sent them because they say they came on their personal behalf,” said Benzige, the aid to the king that has been living with him since 1961 when he fled Rwanda in the wake of agitation for independence and republic that would overthrow government.
He further stressed that the King himself was not allowed to return home as a king but now the delegation from Kigali wants to bury him as a king and not a usual Rwanda like the Kigali government had wanted when he was alive.
Last Saturday there was a mass in St. Athanese in Utah where he liked to pray and there were many Christians that attended the Latin session. Even Pastor Ezra Mpyisi was present at the ceremony.
“For us we will not rest him in Rwanda. I as a spokesperson of the king I explained that we should abide with his wish and thought about his burial,” Benzige lamented that when the President of Rwanda Paul Kagame was still a Vice President, went to the US requesting him to return like any other Rwandan and the King would not be contented with such a suggestion but to be welcomed as normal Rwandan King.
The then Vice President Kagame said that the king would have returned until a red carpet was laid before him.
King Kigeli V himself urged the government and Rwandans to be welcomed like any other King with due respect recognized by the international community and the world at large.
“Why didn’t they from earlier on decide to receive him as the Rwandan King until he passed?” Benzige mourned.
He said that had the king accepted to return to Rwandan in writing or verbal note then it would have been known to Rwandans and the world.
There is nothing that shows that the delegation led by his other aid Pastor Mpyisi was sent by government and moreover that it denies being in the US on behalf of the government.
Benzige could not exactly tell whether he would insist that the King’s body be rested in the US or will negotiate and consider changing mind on that matter, but so far the Rwandan government apart from the statement it made on the passing of the king has not notified public on his final resting place.
King Kigeli V Ndahindurwa died on October 16 2016 due to hypertension at the age of 80 years.
Like his father Yuhi V Musinga, he could not return to Rwanda from his visit to the then Zaire now DR.Congo as tensions to turn the country into a republic forced him into exile in the United States of America where has been living until his last days.
