OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has committed to the Rwandan government Rwf17 billion to support water and sanitation projects in the country.
The funds are part of a 20 year loan to the government through which projects fostering water and sanitation will me realized.
The projects will have 1.3 million Rwandans accessing clean water and improved sanitation services.
Claver Gatete, the Minister for Finance and Economic Planning said the funds will ensure that Rwandans have improved access to clean water and sanitation.
“The project will ensure equitable provision of adequate, reliable water and sanitation services to improve quality standards.Cooperation with OFID is strategic and in line with Rwanda’s vision. We look forward continued cooperation,”said after the signing of the loaning by OPEC OFID.
Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC) is expected to renovate Gihira II water treatment plant to link Musanze, Rubavu, Muhanga, Nyagatare, Huye and Rusizi to clean water. Also some of the sewerage systems in cities like Kigali will be improved.
Today 85 per cent Rwandans access clean water but government wants to achieve a 100 per cent linkage of populations to cleaner water by 2020.
